Unit Overview:
In this unit, children will be ‘hooked’ in by a vegetable attack in their classroom. They will explore the vocabulary ‘hero’ and ‘villain’ and create a ‘wanted’ poster describing the Evil Pea after he attacked their classroom. Shared reading lessons will introduce the text ‘Supertato’ by Sue Hendra. The class will be taught about ‘good reading strategies’ as they begin to read the story. They will then make simple predictions based on what they have already read. Shared reading lessons will then introduce the concept of making inferences about characters feelings and actions. Children will then sequence and order the story using story maps, storyboards and retell the story verbally. Exclamation marks within the text will be explored. Children will understand that exclamation marks are used to indicate a strong feeling or emotion. They will practice using exclamation marks when writing simple comic strips of the story ‘Supertato’. The class will then plan their own ‘Super Vegetable’ and different superpowers that it may have. Using their new character, they will use simple planning documents to plan out their own ideas for a story where ‘Evil Pea’ strikes again. Shared writing lessons will model the writing process for writing their very own ‘Super Vegetable’ adventure story.
