Unit Overview:
In this unit, a ‘special delivery’ will be delivered to class. The ‘hook’ task will lead the children to discover the text ‘The Jolly Christmas Postman’ by Allan and Janet Ahlberg. Shared reading lessons will take the children on a journey to visit each character within the story (The Three Bears, Little Red Riding Hood, Humpty Dumpty, Gingerbread Man, Mister Wolf and Mr and Mrs Santa). Reading lessons will teach children the skills to make verbal predictions, simple inferences and retell familiar stories. Grammar and punctuation lessons will guide children to develop question sentences and expanded noun phrases within their writing.
This unit will explore a number of different writing opportunities: writing Christmas cards; writing ‘question’ challenge cards for a board game; character description; sequencing and retelling a traditional tale (writing a Toytown Christmas Annual); writing a descriptive poster for ‘Wolf’s Spotter’s guide; writing sentences to describe elements of the story from ‘The Jolly Postman’; planning and writing a letter to Santa.
