Reading Objectives:
Becoming very familiar with key stories,  retelling them and considering their particular characteristics.
Predicting what might happen on the basis of what has been read so far.
Discussing the significance of the title and events.
 
Speaking and Listening Objectives:
Articulate and justify answers.
 
Grammar and Spelling Objectives:
Leaving spaces between words.
Beginning to punctuate sentences using a capital letter and a full stop.
Use adjectives to describe nouns.
 
Writing Objectives:
Sequencing sentences to form short narratives.  
Saying out loud what they are going to write about.
To write simple sentences.
 
Unit Overview:
In this unit, children will be introduced to the text Handa’s Surprise by Eileen Browne. They will receive a letter from Handa, answering her questions about fruits verbally, justifying their ideas. Shared reading lessons will guide children towards making predictions based upon what they have read so far. As the children become familiar with this key text, they will discuss the significance of the title and events. They will then sequence and retell the story using role play, story maps and writing frames. Adjectives within the text will be identified and explored, children will create their own word bank of adjectives to support them to write descriptive sentences about the different fruits from the story.
