Unit Overview:
In this unit, children will be ‘hooked’ by a mystery scene in their classroom. A letter from ‘Max’ will explain that the ‘Wild Thing’ visited! Children will then be introduced to the story ‘Where the Wild Things Are’ by Maurice Sendak. Shared reading lessons will teach the children to make simple predictions based on what they have read so far. Role play and freeze frames from certain points in the story will encourage children to make inferences based on character feelings and motives. The class will then order and sequence the events of the story based on what they read. Children will then be taught specific grammar and punctuation skills linked to the story. They will revise capital letters and full stops and explore how suitable adjectives can be used to describe nouns. Based on this, children will be required to complete an independent write of a character description based on the adjectives generated within the unit. The final write will lead towards a book review; children will talk through their thoughts about the book and write an honest review based on their personal thoughts.
