Unit Overview:
This unit begins with an engaging ‘hook’ activity, creating a special potion in a witch’s cauldron. The class will then be introduced to the text ‘Room on the Broom’ by Julia Donaldson. Shared reading lessons will encourage children to make simple predictions, and explore key words within the text. Children will also be taught how to make inferences about characters using evidence from the text and information they already know. The class will be taught to recognise rhyming words within the text, followed by activities to generate their own rhyming words for sentences. Once the class are familiar with the story, they will use storyboards and story maps to retell the story using sequencing, temporal connectives. The class will then explore onomatopoeia and exclamation marks within the text, generating their own onomatopoeia for the ‘dragon’ in the story. Following this, the class will focus on the character description of the ‘beast’ within the story, exploring expanded noun phrases used within the text. Children will then generate their own expanded noun phrases for the ‘witch’ and the ‘dragon’ within the story, writing a short description for these characters. The class will then be guided through the writing process, planning ideas to write a story from ‘The Dragon’s Side of the Story’. Shared writing lessons will model good writing practice, building upon the grammar and spelling skills taught within this unit.
