Based upon this, children will make simple predictions about the story ‘Grandad’s Island’ by Benji Davis. Shared reading lessons will lead on to discussions about their personal lives. Children will make links and talk about people who are important to them and why. As the class continue to read the story, they will begin to answer questions and make inferences about characters feelings and emotions. The children will then use storyboards and story maps to retell the story of ‘Grandad’s Island’. Freeze frames and hot-seating activities will be explored to develop the children’ verbal feelings and emotions linked to the characters in the book. Grammar lessons will use elements from the story to explore adjectives to describe the setting. The children will also be taught about using coordinating conjunctions (and, so, but). The end of unit writing focus will be to plan, draft and edit a letter from Grandad to Syd. The letter will describe what it is like living on the island.
