Reading Objectives:

PSHE Objectives:
- The characteristics of friendships, including mutual respect, truthfulness, trustworthiness, loyalty, kindness, generosity, trust, sharing interests and experiences and support with problems and difficulties.
- That healthy friendships are positive and welcoming towards others, and do not make others feel lonely or excluded.
- The importance of respecting others, even when they are very different from them (for example, physically, in character, personality or backgrounds), or make different choices or have different preferences or beliefs.
Unit Overview:
In this unit, children will be introduced to the story ‘The Proudest Blue’ by Ibtihaj Muhammad through shared reading lessons. Character’s feeling will be discussed through events in the story. Children will generate words and phrases that display feelings of pride and strength for Muslim girls wearing hijabs. Children will consider how the main character might be feeling when she experiences negative words at school. They will join in with group activities to sort words and phrases that explain respectfulness and kindness, and those words which do not. The class will then be taught about the author of this book, digging deeper into the reasons she wrote the story to help children like herself. The class will then plan and write their own email / letter to the author, explaining what they like about the story and the different things that that make them feel proud. Finally, the class will follow visual and oral instructions to make their own paper boat, covered with statement sentences about being kind and respectful.
