Unit Overview:
This Year 2 English non-fiction unit is based on Florence Nightingale by Kay Barnham and leads pupils towards writing an informative biography of Florence Nightingale. The final outcome has a clear purpose: to inform other children about Florence’s life, her work as a nurse and the lasting impact she had on hospitals and nursing.
The unit begins with a strong reading focus, developing pupils’ understanding of non-fiction through prediction, retrieval, sequencing and vocabulary work. Children explore the organisation and features of non-fiction texts, use a glossary to understand unfamiliar vocabulary and sequence significant events from Florence’s life chronologically. Pupils then develop the grammar and sentence-level skills needed for their final outcome. They learn to use expanded noun phrases, conjunctions including and, but and because, commas in lists and consistent past tense. Finally, children plan and draft their biographies using key words and notes. They organise information chronologically under subheadings and apply their grammar learning independently. The unit concludes with pupils rereading, editing and improving their work before publishing their completed biographies for a meaningful audience.
