Unit Overview:
In this unit, children will be hooked by a visit to their school forest area to investigate the ‘mess’ they find. They will then be introduced to the story ‘Tidy’ by Emily Gravett and begin to make simple predictions about the text. Shared reading lessons will teach children the strategies to summarise, make inferences, sequence and retell the story. Speaking and listening lessons will encourage children to consider a moral question about forests and generate their own questions to ask characters through hot seating activities. The class will then read an article about ‘Protecting Forests’ and identify the features of this article. Grammar lessons will then explore the use of expanded noun phrases in which children will be required to write a short forest setting description. They will then be taught how to use commas in a list, possessive apostrophes and subordination within sentences. Children will then be guided through the writing process to plan, draft, write and edit their own article about protecting forests. The article will include each grammar element taught within this unit. The class will then publish their article by hand or using digital devices to create a class magazine.
