Unit Overview:
This Year 2 English unit is based on Look Up! by Nathan Bryon and Dapo Adeola. Throughout the sequence of lessons, children develop their reading, speaking and writing skills while exploring the inspiring message of looking up from technology to appreciate the wonders of the world around them. The unit culminates in pupils planning, drafting, editing and publishing a persuasive event flyer encouraging people to put down their phones and come to watch a spectacular meteor shower.
Children begin by exploring the story through prediction, discussion and comprehension activities, developing their ability to retrieve information, make inferences and sequence events. They then deepen their understanding of meteors through non-fiction texts and video clips, generating their own "Did you know...?" factual questions. The writing sequence builds progressively through explicit teaching of key grammar objectives. Children learn to use expanded noun phrases to create vivid descriptions, subordinating conjunctions (because, when, if and that) to write persuasive sentences, and persuasive language to engage the reader. Using a structured planning process, pupils identify the features of a persuasive flyer before composing their own. They then edit and improve their work through peer assessment before publishing their final flyers using child-friendly publishing software. The completed flyers are displayed around the school, providing a real audience and purpose for writing while celebrating the children's achievements as confident, independent writers.
