Reading Objectives:
- Discussing and clarifying the meanings of words, linking new meanings to known vocabulary.
- Being introduced to non-fiction texts that are structured in different ways.
- Making inferences on the basis of what is being said and done.
- Drawing on what they already know or on background information and vocabulary provided by the teacher.
- Discussing the sequence of events in books and how items of information are related.
Speaking and Listening Objectives:
- Use spoken language to develop understanding through speculating, hypothesising, imagining and exploring ideas.
- Participate in role play.
Grammar and Spelling Objectives:
- Use expanded noun phrases to describe and specify [for example, the blue butterfly].
- Use subordination (using when, if, that, because) when writing sentences.
- Use of capital letters, full stops, question marks and exclamation marks to demarcate sentences.
Writing Objectives:
- Writing down ideas and/or key words, including new vocabulary.
- Encapsulating what they want to say, sentence by sentence.
- Proofreading to check for errors in spelling, grammar and punctuation (for example, ends of sentences punctuated correctly).
Unit Overview:
In this unit, children will be hooked in with a delivery of half-eaten food inside a basket. They will investigate this basket using the clues inside. They will speculate and hypothesis about the basket through speaking and listening to answer questions to come to a conclusion. The class will then be introduced to the text ‘The Lighthouse Keeper’s Lunch’ by Ronda Armitage. Shared reading lessons will focus on clarifying some challenging vocabulary within the text, making inferences and sequencing the story. The class will then prepare their own class picnic, following recipes to create simple dishes. Based on this, the class will independently write their own recipes (short write). Grammar lessons will explore the use of expanded noun phrases with in the text; the class will then write a short coastline setting description using suitable expanded noun phrases. Children will also learn about the use of subordinating conjunctions, question marks and exclamation marks used effectively within texts. Following this, children will be taught about the planning process in order to write their very own story from the seagull’s point of view ‘The Seagulls’ Lunch’. Children will use story maps, and boxed planning templates to support them to form their ideas. Shared writing lessons will guide children through the writing process, using the grammar and punctuation skills practiced throughout the unit.
