Unit Overview:
In this unit, children will be hooked in with the arrival of a mysterious travel suitcase and postcard from Sunny the meerkat. They will investigate the suitcase and the clues inside, using speaking and listening skills to speculate and hypothesise about where Sunny may have travelled and why he has left home.
The class will then be introduced to the text Meerkat Mail by Emily Gravett. Shared reading lessons will focus on predicting events, making inferences about Sunny’s feelings and sequencing the different places he visits on his journey.
Grammar lessons will explore the use of expanded noun phrases to describe places and animals Sunny encounters, commas in a list, and subordinating conjunctions such as because and when. These grammar skills will be applied through short writing tasks linked to the text.
Following this, children will be taught the planning process in order to write their own letter home from Sunny describing one of his adventures. Children will use planning templates and story maps to support their ideas. Shared writing lessons will guide children through the writing process using the grammar and punctuation skills practised throughout the unit.
