Unit Overview:

In this unit, children will learn the names of continents and poles. They will also be able to find the UK on a world map, the Northern and Southern Hemisphere, the equator. The children will learn the 4 main compass points and use these to explain where certain places are. The children will look closely at the continent of Africa, and they will start to discover how the physical and human geography of a place can shape the lives of its population. The children will be able name some occupations of some communities in Africa. When discovering African Art, children will explore the different styles of African Artwork. They will then learn about using silhouettes in art. They will understand that a silhouette is represented as a sold shape of a single colour (usually black) that has its edges matching the outline of the subject. The children will choose an animal of their choice found on an African safari to trace onto a black piece of card and cut a silhouette of. They will then present this on a background that they have created which depicts a sunrise or sunset. To achieve their sunrise/sunset background, the children will use pastels to create a horizontal ombre effect onto their paper.
