Unit Overview:

This 14-lesson Year 3 English unit is based on The True Story of the Three Little Pigs by Jon Scieszka. Children become investigative journalists for The Daily Woodland News, exploring the mysterious destruction of two pigs' houses and the arrest of Alexander T. Wolf. The unit begins with an exciting woodland crime scene investigation, encouraging children to make predictions, ask questions and use evidence to justify their ideas. Through shared reading, retrieval and inference activities, children explore the wolf's version of events and compare different perspectives. They develop critical thinking skills by distinguishing between facts, opinions and claims, recognising the importance of balanced reporting. Children investigate newspaper features, including headlines, introductions, chronological events, eyewitness quotations and endings. Grammar lessons explicitly teach powerful verbs, precise vocabulary, fronted adverbials of time and place, conjunctions and correctly punctuated direct speech. Using teacher modelling, shared writing and differentiated activities, children progressively develop the skills needed to plan, draft, edit and publish their own newspaper reports. The final outcome is a carefully presented newspaper article that informs woodland residents about the incidents, includes contrasting eyewitness accounts and maintains a balanced viewpoint without deciding whether the wolf is guilty or innocent.
